We Luv the Soo!
It is absolutely remarkable how things have progressed since John Howard Society opened
the Sault Ste. Marie & District office in 1962. From a group of volunteers, to the first paid
staff in 1978, to numerous preventative community programs in 2007, thousands of lives
have been empowered.
John Howard Society, an Agency of the United Way, has been providing services to Sault
Ste. Marie and area, working towards “effective, just and humane responses to crime and its
causes”. We believe that the best way to reduce crime and protect our community against
the high cost of crime, is to prevent young people from dropping out of school, improve the
way people manage the problems of life, rehabilitate offenders, and keep people employed.
We are creating solutions that work.
In any involvement with John Howard Society, individuals are welcomed, respected and
encouraged to improve their self-value and current life circumstances. It is exciting to
see the progress, breakthroughs, and sense of hope that individuals feel when they realize
they are not alone in their life struggles. John Howard Society provides quality programs
matched to the individual’s needs, both youth and adult.
John Howard Society is pleased to be partnering with the United Way on this project
and working together to strengthen our community. The mission of the United Way is "To improve lives and build community by engaging individuals and mobilizing collective
action." Their mission is put to practice through the identification of key priority issues
in Sault Ste. Marie through the development and support of programs, services and
partnerships to create measurable impact with respect to these priorities. Current priorities
are Employment, Health, Poverty and Youth Issues.
Proceeds of this game will be used toward teaching our youth the social skills necessary to
stay in school and teaching skills to those facing or at risk of homelessness.
